The key to getting the best effect is to place them in a bottle with a shape like a Chianti bottle so the colored wax slides down the contours. If you put them in a straight candlestick, you'll have quite a mess on your hands! Even when using a Chianti bottle, I would suggest putting a plate or something underneath it just to be safe, although it probably won't be needed.
